Cooking Whole Grains Video

The first full Greens & Seeds video is here! I’m so excited to share with you a new facet of this website. My ultimate goal is to help people make healthy meals for themselves, not necessarily by just copying my recipes (though that’s ok too, for now). I want to give people the tools they need to feel comfortable, confidant and creative in the kitchen. It is my hope that this video series will help with that.

There are six more videos filmed and ready to be edited, but let’s talk about this first one that is with us here today. It is a very simple film to show how to cook whole grains. You’ll see shots of many different grains that can be prepared with this same technique. All types of brown rice (long grain, short grain, sweet) wild rice, farro, wheat berries, pearled barley. If you’d like to see close up shots of individual grains, go to my Whole Grains post. To cook all these types of grains, first measure out 1 cup of grains per 4 people you are serving. Add double the amount of water. Bring it to a boil, turn down to low and simmer for 45 minutes, or until the liquid is mostly gone. Make sure not to pick of the lid and let out steam. If you let it sit a few minutes off the heat, it will keep your grains from sticking to the bottom of your pot. And using a heavy bottomed pot will ensure you don’t lose too much heat and the grains will cook evenly.
